All wet
One of the main complaints about umbrellas is that when you close them the water runs down the handle. Take getting into a car for an example. You duck in, holding the umbrella aloft and try to close it, so you have to open the car door and pull the umbrella closed. Now you are wet – something you hoped the umbrella would prevent.

This makes it easier to close while under shelter – and the rain stays on the wet side of the umbrella when you put it down.
